The Health Benefits of Essential Oils and How to Use Them as Part of Your Holistic Care Routine

Essential Oils to use in holistic treatment and healthy living

When I found out that certain essential oils have powerful effects on the process that leads to cancer cell death, I decided to add them to my life. Frankincense (1), especially used in combination with Sandalwood (2) produces great results according to these cited studies. (Please note, for a variety of reasons, it's best to use a "carrier oil" like fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil on your skin before applying an essential oil.)

Am I saying that bathing in these essential oils will cure your cancer? Not. In. The. Least.
Am I saying that studies done in the laboratory on cancer cells and the effects that specific essential oils have on those cancer cells is promising and something that can easily be added to a daily routine without any crazy side-effects? Yes, yes I am.

Rocky Mountain Oils - RMO

(previously, Native American Nutritionals)

My friend Julianne (the RN and my "cancer doula" that you can read about herehere, and here) got me uses essential oils more and more. During the first 3 weeks after I was given the diagnosis, she came to most doctor appointments and she brought her Natural First Aid Kit ready to go each time.

We developed a routine for the waiting room. As my friend (and not as an RN), she'd give me Bach Flower Essences orally under my tongue. Rescue Remedy is "to deal with emergencies and crises" and Rock Rose "adds courage and presence of mind in the face of terror or extreme fear." Then we used something similar to RMO's Aligning essential oil blend (Rosewood, Spruce, Frankincense, and Blue Tansy) the back of my neck to "calm and center the emotions, bring about peace and relaxation, help build courage, confidence, and self-esteem." The we'd put something similar to RMO's Calming essential oil blend (Tangerine, Ylang Ylang, Orange, Blue Tansy, and Patchouli) on the insides of my wrists to "help balance emotions and relieve worries, while soothing tense situations, to inspire harmony, joy, and gratitude, while creating feelings of patience and peace." Then we were ready to meet with the doctors!

My Daily Essential Oil Routine

Most mornings I put fractionated coconut oil on my mastectomy site, remaining breast, and armpits with Lemon essential oil. Then just before bed I use fractionated coconut oil on the same places and use Frankincense and Sandalwood essential oils. This is a time that take just a minute to lovingly touch my body and practice gratitude for all that it does. It's best not to put essential oils directly on your skin unless they are diluted with a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil (your skin and liver will thank you).

Then throughout the day and evening I will put some in a diffuser depending on what's going on in our home... do we need some peace? do we need a little energy? do we want to kill some germs? And then I'll various essential oils as needed... peppermint for a headache, lavender for some calming, and grapefruit to make me feel happy.
